Menorca with kids in 5 days. Family adventure to Balearic Islands.

Over the last week, we’ve been exploring the length and breadth of the stunning Spanish island of Menorca. We went for 5 days, 4 nights with kids to Menorca and it was just outstanding. Menorca is less known Balearic Island as it’s bigger sister island Majorca or even Ibiza (the quiet part for families). Menorca is a treasure of an island in Spain. It’s got all the beauty of the Balearics Islands except its a lot greener, cleaner and much more unspoilt.

The little island of Menorca is so green, a little bit wild (because of roads) and unspoiled place. It’s full of hidden coves and ancient towns, winding sand roads and historic monuments. There’s unexpected treasures at every corner, and unlike many of its neighbours, it actually feels Spanish.

How we got to Menorca?

We took our flights few months earlier to our trip, with a great offer that launched vueling. So, for all 4 it costed us 200 EUR. We arrived in Menorca early in the morning, took the car we rented and went directly to the apartments. It was pretty early to have our check-ins, but the receptionist was so kind with us, that gave us key to enter the apartment at the time we arrived. After leaving all the things in the room, we went exploring the island.

Rental cars in Menorca.

As I said it previously, we rented a car for all our stay. We took it from one of the companies that is not well known, and it has no office in the airport. Even though, they have transfers for their customers, and every 15 min, take their customers to the office and back to the airport. So, it was pretty easy and quick to have our car when we arrived.

Here to say, I spent nearly 3h in one of the days previously to the trip, till I found the company we rented the car. We paid only 190EUR, for a total of 5 days.

Hotel or Apartment in Menorca?

We love staying in hotels, but with kids, it is much easier to have an apartment during travels. In apartments kids feel like home, and it is easier to me to have snacks and meals ready for them at any time.

Our apartment was only 5 minutes walk from Cala Blanca. We left all our belongings after check-in, and went directly the beach.

It was a great way to relax after waking up early in the morning, get our car and get to the apartments.

How to pack to Menorca?

Can you believe that we went with 2 backpacks for 4? Yes, it seems unbelievable, but even in these 2 backpacks we had our camera, that is not a small one.

  • Few t-shirts and 2 or 3 shorts, maybe 2 or 3 dresses, that are easier to wear– the island has a Mediterranean climate so temperatures are often in the high twenties and early thirties degrees Celsius.
  • Comfy sandals (we use to go on sneakers, as those are very comfy)
  • Bikinis – you won’t be able to leave those hidden coves without jumping in at least once.
  • Sunscreen- with kids it is really needed, we used 2 little sunscreens during our 5 day-stay.
  • A great mood or vacation mood ON – just to enjoy better the island.

About Menorca.

Being a UNESCO biosphere reserve, it means the environment is prioritised over socioeconomic development, which has led to the preservation of many areas of Menorca.

The highest building has 3 floors and only can be seen in Ciutadella or Mahon, which are considered the biggest cities of the island.

There are lots of ways to enjoy the pure nature, by doing natural activities on the island. The famous Cami de Cavalls hike circles the island, and at 180 km in length. I have read that it can be done in 7 days. We did only 2 km of it, with kids, and it was more than enough for us :). Alternatively, mountain-biking, horse riding and golfing are all possible on the island. We did neither one, apart of hiking.

If you are a water lover, then there are options of sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing, and even surfing, is possible.

Our favourite activity was definitely swimming – how could we resist those crystal clear waters?

Beaches of Menorca.

Did you know that Menorca has 99 beaches to discover? We neither, and we even didn´t get to discover all of these. But, we discovered lots of these during our stay. At least, 3 beaches a day we have seen and I am feeling proud, as doing this with 2 kids, is not as easy as you think.

The island itself, has almost 40 km in lengths, but due to low communication within beaches, many of these remain virgin, and you have to get to those hiking.

Later will share with you in detail, all the beaches we have visited and describing in details what we did. But here I will share you a secret, I’ve never seen seawater as blue as the waters surrounding Menorca. In fact, we were capturing all the beaches so many times, till we got the ideal picture of the color of the water. For sure, here you can say easier the 50 shades of blue in Menorca…hahaha.

Monte Toro.

The highest point of the island. We really advise you to go there and enjoy the spectacular view over the white villages, lighthouses and sea. We took our morning coffee there, and it was just spectacular.

Ciutadella and Mahon.

These 2 are the most recommended cities to visit, but we, didn’t get to visit each of it. We have just passed through, and there are lots of things to see.

Lighthouses of Menorca.

Even if it is a small island, it has seven around Menorca. We visited only three of these. The main, that is considered in Cap de Favaritx lighthouse, can be found within Parc Natural de S´Albufera des Grau. If you want to visit it, we just advise you to get to the closest beach. It has a special blue color, and the beach is red because of rocks.

Why you should visit Menorca?

Menorca definitely is a perfect place for families with kids. But, definitely it can be discovered as solo traveler, or couple. It features a slower pace, but if you enjoy more active travels, then there are plenty of pursuits for active travellers too. Menorca is popular with cyclists, but hiking is a must do place. Menorca’s most famous route Cami de Cavalls, has a great way to discover the island.

Menorca means chilled vibes, that it’s the perfect place for a relaxed couple’s getaway, or a family holiday. I really believe that the island offers something spiritual which is healing for travellers or troubled souls. It was calming, quiet and unassuming. And at the end of September we had a great weather, almost all the days 33 C degrees, and super warm water to swim. If you love the sea and beaches you’ll be spoiled for choice and I am sure you won´t need any Maldives.
