Choosing where to stay in Ibiza is probably the most important decision you’ll make when planning your holiday.

Before our trip, we spent hours comparing hotels, reading reviews, and trying to decide which part of the island would suit our family best. Like many first-time visitors, we initially thought Ibiza was mainly about nightlife. But after spending a week exploring the island by car—driving from the peaceful coves of Portinatx in the north to the dramatic cliffs of Cala d’Hort in the southwest—we discovered something completely different.

Ibiza is a surprisingly diverse destination. Every corner of the island has its own personality.

Some areas are lively and energetic, with beach clubs and nightlife that continue until sunrise. Others are quiet seaside villages where families stroll along the promenade after dinner, children build sandcastles on calm beaches, and the loudest sound is the gentle splash of the Mediterranean.

For our family, choosing the right location made all the difference.

We stayed in Es Canar, on Ibiza’s east coast, at Leonardo Royal Suites Ibiza Santa Eulalia, and it turned out to be the perfect base for exploring the island. Every morning we enjoyed breakfast overlooking the sea before setting off to discover a different beach, and every evening we returned to a peaceful atmosphere that felt worlds away from Ibiza’s party reputation.

Why Choosing the Right Area Matters

One thing we realised very quickly is that Ibiza is much larger than it looks on a map.

Driving from one side of the island to the other usually takes around an hour, but each region offers a completely different experience.

Ask yourself these questions before booking:

• Are you travelling with young children?
• Do you want to explore different beaches every day?
• Is nightlife important?
• Would you rather stay in a quiet village or a lively resort?

Once you answer those questions, choosing the perfect area becomes much easier.

1. Es Canar – Our Favourite Area for Families ⭐

If you’re travelling with children, Es Canar is, in our opinion, one of the best places to stay in Ibiza.

This charming seaside resort on the island’s east coast feels relaxed, safe, and welcoming. Unlike the busier tourist hubs, Es Canar has managed to preserve a slower pace of life that immediately makes you feel on holiday.

This is where we stayed during our trip, and if we returned to Ibiza tomorrow, we’d book the same area again.

Every morning started with breakfast overlooking the Mediterranean before we drove off to explore another beach. By late afternoon, we were back in Es Canar enjoying a peaceful walk along the promenade, watching boats in the bay, and choosing one of the waterfront restaurants for dinner.

It quickly became our favourite part of the island.

Only a few minutes from Es Canar lies Santa Eulalia, one of Ibiza’s most elegant towns.

Instead of beach clubs and loud music, you’ll find stylish cafés, boutique shops, excellent restaurants, and one of the island’s prettiest marinas.

We loved walking along the wide palm-lined promenade, especially in the evening when families, cyclists, and locals all come together to enjoy the sea breeze.

Santa Eulalia feels authentic, yet sophisticated.

It’s perfect if you’re looking for a more refined Ibiza experience.

This was one of our favourite day trips.

We spent hours kayaking through hidden coves, swimming in incredibly clear water, and enjoying one of the most beautiful coastlines we saw during our entire holiday.

Although families do stay here, it feels much livelier than Es Canar or Santa Eulalia.

If nightlife is your priority, this is where you’ll want to be.

San Antonio has evolved considerably over the years.

While it’s still well known for nightlife, it has also become one of the best places on the island to watch sunset.

The waterfront promenade fills every evening as visitors gather to watch the sun disappear into the Mediterranean.

Accommodation here is often more affordable than in Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa.

7. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) – History Meets Modern Ibiza

If you love history, culture, shopping, and dining, Ibiza Town is a fantastic choice.

The highlight is undoubtedly Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town.

Its cobbled streets, ancient walls, hidden courtyards, and panoramic viewpoints make it one of the most beautiful places on the island.

During our visit, we easily spent several hours wandering through its narrow streets before enjoying dinner overlooking the marina.

Which Area Did We Choose?

After comparing different locations, we chose Es Canar, and looking back, we’d make exactly the same decision again.

It offered everything we wanted:

🍽️ Plenty of restaurants

🚗 Easy access to every corner of the island

🏨 A spacious hotel with sea views

Thanks to our rental car, we explored Cala Nova, Cala Llenya, Cala Xarraca, Portinatx, Cala Salada, Cala Saladeta, Cala Comte, Cala Bassa, Cala d’Hort, and Dalt Vila before returning to Es Canar each evening.

It gave us the best of both worlds: adventure during the day and relaxation at night.

Final Thoughts

After spending a week exploring Ibiza from north to south, one thing became very clear.

There isn’t one perfect place to stay.

There is only the perfect place for your style of travel.

For us, Es Canar ticked every box. It gave us peaceful evenings, beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, easy access to the rest of the island, and a hotel that made us feel at home.
