Playa de Aguilar, Asturias: A Family Beach Guide
After the cliffs and stone coves around Cudillero, Playa de Aguilar is the easy one: golden sand, lifeguards, a big car park and a short flat walk to the water. It’s in Muros de Nalón, a short drive east of Cudillero. We came here in July 2021 with Damian (8) and Marc (5) on the same day as Cudillero and San Juan de la Arena.
The short version
- Where: Muros de Nalón, just east of Cudillero, western Asturias.
- Beach: 360 m of golden sand between rocky headlands.
- Facilities: lifeguards in summer, toilets, showers, a boardwalk and step-free access.
- Parking: a car park with over 100 spaces.
- Watch out: the waves can be strong, so swim between the flags.
Short on time? Our top 3 picks on the western Asturias coast
Albergue Andén de Novellana – Novellana, a simple hostel in the old railway station with family rooms and a shared kitchen, minutes from the Playa del Silencio clifftop.
La Casona de Pío – Cudillero, a converted fish-salting factory a short walk from the harbour, with a home-made breakfast.
Hotel El Rosal de Cudillero – Cudillero, a renovated mansion with a garden and free parking, one of the best-rated stays on this coast.

Why it’s good for families
Everything that’s hard on the wilder beaches nearby is easy here. You park close by, walk a short way on the flat, and there are lifeguards in summer and toilets and showers. That’s why I’d pick it over Playa del Silencio for swimming with young children, and keep Silencio for the sunset view.
The waves and the flags
This is the open Cantabrian Sea, and the waves can be strong. Swim only in the lifeguarded area and follow the flags. The rocks at either end are fun to explore at low tide with a grown-up close by.
When to go
June to September, when lifeguards are on duty. In July and August the car park fills up on sunny weekends, so arrive in the morning.
Combine it with Cudillero
Aguilar pairs naturally with Cudillero: the village and a viewpoint in the morning, the beach in the afternoon. We stayed nearby at Albergue Andén de Novellana.
