Discovering Novellana, Cudillero: A Hidden Gem in Asturias

Novellana, Asturias: Where We Stayed

Novellana is a tiny rural parish in the municipality of Cudillero, on the western coast of Asturias. It has no harbour, no promenade and very few people. It was our base from 6 to 10 July 2021 on our road trip from Barcelona, with Damian (8) and Marc (5).

We chose it for the location. What we remember is the sunsets over Playa del Silencio.

The short version

  • Where: Cudillero municipality, western Asturias, about 15 minutes from Cudillero village.
  • Where we stayed: Albergue Andén de Novellana, a hostel in the former railway station.
  • Best thing nearby: the Playa del Silencio viewpoint, under 3 km away. Go for sunset.
  • Who it suits: families with a car who want a quiet base for the western coast.

Where we stayed: Albergue Andén de Novellana

The hostel is in the building of Novellana’s old railway station, right next to the line. It’s a private albergue on the Camino del Norte, so most guests are pilgrims walking to Santiago. That makes it quiet, early to bed and friendly.

What it has, according to its current listing:

  • Shared dormitories (18 beds) plus private rooms, including a double and a quadruple, which is the one to ask for as a family of four
  • Shared kitchen, garden, washing machine and dryer, with sheets and towels included
  • Breakfast and a communal dinner available at extra cost
  • Open 1 March to 15 November. Check-in is 14:00–18:00

Listed prices are around €50–60 for a double and €64 for a quadruple. We don’t remember what we paid in 2021, so check directly before booking.

Honest verdict: it’s a hostel, not a hotel. If you want a pool and a restaurant, stay in Cudillero or Luarca. If you want a clean, cheap, peaceful base between the two, it did the job for us.

Playa del Silencio: watch the sunset from the cliff

Playa del Silencio is less than 3 km from Novellana and is one of the most photographed beaches in Asturias: a curved cove of grey stones under high cliffs, in the protected landscape of the western Asturian coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Novellana?

Novellana is a rural parish in the municipality of Cudillero, on the western coast of Asturias, about 15 minutes from Cudillero village.

Where can you stay in Novellana?

We stayed at Albergue Andén de Novellana, a private hostel in the former railway station with dormitories, a double and a quadruple room, a shared kitchen and a garden. It is open from 1 March to 15 November.

How far is Playa del Silencio from Novellana?

Less than 3 km. There is a viewpoint at the top of the cliff, and a 10–15 minute path down to the beach.

Is Playa del Silencio good for kids?

The viewpoint is, especially at sunset. The beach itself is stones rather than sand, with a steep path and no lifeguard, toilets or showers, so it is harder with young children.

Is Novellana a good base for Asturias?

For the western coast, yes. Cudillero, Cadavedo, Cabo Busto and Luarca are all within about 30 minutes. For Gijón, Lastres and Llanes, a base further east saves driving.
