What Rupit actually is
A village of stone houses built onto and into the rock, with narrow streets, some of them cobbled, and a mountain on either side.
Its origins go back to the ninth century, when the castle of Rupit was built. Houses grew up around it over the centuries and the village reached its peak in the seventeenth century — which is roughly the Rupit you walk through today, medieval in plan and early-modern in most of its stonework.
The detail worth slowing down for: look at the doorways. Many of the houses have inscriptions carved into the stone above or beside the door, giving the age of the house and something of its history. Once you notice the first one you start reading every doorway in the village, and a one-hour walk becomes a much better one.
That’s the thing to tell children to hunt for, and it’s the reason Rupit rewards walking slowly in a way most “charming village” day trips don’t.
The suspension bridge
The suspension bridge into the old town is what Rupit is known for, and we didn’t get to it — three children and a playground got in the way. It’s the reason we’ll go back.

Is Rupit good with children?
Yes, with the right expectations. There is a playground, nothing is ticketed so you can leave whenever they have had enough, and the carved dates above the doorways make a genuine treasure hunt. It is steep and cobbled, so a carrier is easier than a pushchair, and there is nothing to go inside — it is a village you look at rather than visit.
Can you visit Rupit and Besalú in one day?
Yes, and most people try. They are about 40 km apart in different comarques. We did both with three children and it worked, but only just — by Besalú they were tired and only wanted the river. Do Rupit first, because Besalú has a riverside park that works well as the tired end of a day.
