Lastres, Asturias with Kids: The Village, the Beach and the Best View
Lastres is a fishing village built almost vertically on a hillside above its harbour, in the municipality of Colunga, about 40 km east of Gijón. Spanish viewers know it as the village from the TV series Doctor Mateo. We stopped here on our last Asturias day in July 2021, heading east with Damian (8) and Marc (5).

Short on time? Our top 3 picks on the eastern Asturias coast
El Cantil – central Llanes, simple, clean and inexpensive, a short walk to the harbour.
Hotel Sablón – Llanes, on the cliff above El Sablón beach, with sea views and parking.
CoolRooms Palacio de Luces – Luces, 2 km from Lastres, a 5-star 16th-century palace with an indoor heated pool and spa.

Mirador de San Roque
The best viewpoint in Lastres, above the village. From here you see the rooftops tumbling down to the harbour, the beach, the Sierra del Sueve and, on a clear day, the Picos de Europa. There’s free parking, so you can start here and walk down.
Walking down through the village
The streets drop steeply to the port past the 18th-century church of Santa María de Sábada and the 15th-century Torre del Reloj, whose clock came from London in 1751. Fans of Doctor Mateo will find signposted filming locations. Pushchairs will struggle, so use a carrier.

Playa de Lastres
The village beach has lifeguards, toilets and showers in season, which makes it an easy choice with children after the climb.
The harbour
An active fishing port with seafood restaurants around it. It’s a good place to stop for lunch at the bottom of the village.
Lastres on an Asturias road trip
We combined Lastres with Gijón and Llanes on our way to Cantabria. Other easy additions nearby are Villaviciosa (18 km), Tazones (27 km) and Ribadesella (29 km).
