North Ibiza vs South Ibiza: Which Part of the Island Is Right for You?

When we started planning our Ibiza trip, one of the first questions we had was where should we actually stay?

Ibiza isn’t a huge island, but the different areas can feel surprisingly different.

The south is the Ibiza most people imagine: famous beach clubs, nightlife, luxury hotels, busy beaches and spectacular sunsets.

The north is a different story. It’s greener, quieter and much more relaxed, with small coves, pine-covered hills, charming villages and some fantastic beaches for snorkeling.

We spent seven days exploring Ibiza by rental car while staying in Es Canar, and that gave us the chance to experience both sides of the island.

For our family, the answer became pretty clear: we preferred the north.

But that doesn’t mean the north is automatically better. It really depends on what you want from your Ibiza holiday.

Here’s everything we learned.

North Ibiza: Quieter, Greener and More Relaxed

If you picture Ibiza as a party island, the north might surprise you.

This was the side of Ibiza we found ourselves enjoying the most. The roads were quieter, the beaches felt more relaxed and there were plenty of places where we could simply stop, swim and enjoy the scenery.

Some days we had no real plan. We’d get in the car, choose a beach we’d never visited and see where the day took us.

That’s exactly the kind of travel we love.

Our Favourite Beaches in North Ibiza

Some of the beaches and coves we visited included:

• Cala Xarraca
• Portinatx
• S’Arenal Petit
• Cala Benirràs
• Cala Llenya
• Cala Nova
• Es Canar

For us, Cala Xarraca and Portinatx were highlights, particularly because the water was so clear and snorkeling was excellent.

Es Canar also worked incredibly well as a family base because we had the beach right in front of us, while still being able to drive to other parts of the island.

What Is North Ibiza Best For?

I’d choose the north if you:

• Travel with children
• Prefer quieter beaches
• Enjoy snorkeling
• Like nature and scenic drives
• Want a more relaxed atmosphere
• Enjoy discovering smaller coves
• Don’t need nightlife every evening

The Atmosphere

The biggest difference we noticed was the pace.

North Ibiza feels slower.

You can spend the morning swimming, have a long lunch, drive through the countryside and finish the day watching the sunset without feeling like you’re constantly surrounded by crowds.

For a family holiday, we loved that.

South Ibiza: Beaches, Beach Clubs and Nightlife

The south is a completely different experience.

This is where you’ll find some of Ibiza’s most famous beaches, luxury hotels, beach clubs and nightlife.

It’s also much closer to Ibiza Town and the airport, which can be convenient if you don’t want to spend much time driving after arriving.

Some of the most famous beaches in the south include:

• Cala Comte
• Cala Bassa
• Cala d’Hort
• Ses Salines
• Playa d’en Bossa
• Es Cavallet

The scenery is spectacular, particularly around Cala d’Hort and Es Vedrà.

But during our July visit, we also noticed that some of these famous places were considerably busier than the beaches we’d visited in the nort

What Is South Ibiza Best For?

The south makes more sense if you:

• Want nightlife
• Love beach clubs
• Prefer luxury resorts
• Want to stay close to Ibiza Town
• Enjoy lively beaches
• Want easy access to famous sunset locations
• Are travelling without children or with older kids who enjoy a busier atmosphere

North Ibiza vs South Ibiza: Beaches

This is probably the hardest category to choose because both sides have amazing beaches.

The difference is more about the type of beach experience.

North Ibiza

Our favourites included:

Cala Xarraca – fantastic for snorkeling and crystal-clear water.

Portinatx – several beaches in one area, making it easy to spend an entire day here.

Cala Llenya – quieter and particularly nice for families.

Cala Nova – spacious and great for a relaxed beach day.

Es Canar – convenient, family-friendly and surrounded by restaurants and accommodation.

South Ibiza

The south has some of the island’s most iconic beaches:

Cala Comte – spectacular turquoise water and one of our favourite sunset locations.

Cala Bassa – beautiful water, sand and pine trees.

Cala d’Hort – the views of Es Vedrà are hard to beat.

Ses Salines – beautiful and surrounded by the scenery of the southern part of the island.

Our Winner: North for Relaxation, South for Iconic Scenery

If we wanted a quieter beach day with the kids, we’d choose the north.

If we wanted to photograph some of Ibiza’s most famous landscapes, we’d happily drive south.

Which Side of Ibiza Is Less Crowded?

This was one of the biggest differences we noticed.

North Ibiza

The north generally felt quieter, particularly away from the biggest resort areas.

We could arrive at some beaches relatively early and enjoy a peaceful morning before the crowds appeared.

South Ibiza

The most famous beaches and attractions can become very busy during July and August.

Parking can also become a consideration, particularly at popular beaches.

Our tip: Wherever you stay, start your beach days early. We often found that arriving before 10 AM made a huge difference.

North Ibiza vs South Ibiza for Snorkeling

If snorkeling is important to you, we’d give the advantage to the north.

Some of our favourite spots were:

• Cala Xarraca
• Portinatx
• S’Arenal Petit
• Cala Benirràs

The rocky coastline and exceptionally clear water made it easy to spot fish close to shore.

The south also has excellent snorkeling, particularly around rocky areas of Cala d’Hort and Cala Comte, but we personally preferred the north.

Our Winner: North Ibiza 🏆

Where Are the Best Sunsets?

This one is much harder.

The south has some of Ibiza’s most famous sunset locations:

• Cala Comte
• Cala d’Hort
• Es Vedrà
• Cap des Falcó

But we also loved watching the sunset at Cala Benirràs in the north.

So rather than choosing one side, we’d say:

South: best for iconic sunset photographs.

North: best for a more relaxed sunset experience.

North Ibiza vs South Ibiza for Families

For us, this was the deciding factor.

We travelled with our children and spent the week exploring the island, and North Ibiza suited our family better.

Our kids loved:

• Kayaking from Es Canar
• Snorkeling at Cala Xarraca
• Exploring Portinatx
• Swimming at Cala Llenya
• Beach hopping
• Watching sunsets
• Exploring Dalt Vila
• Having relaxed evenings at the hotel

We also liked coming back after a long day to somewhere quieter.

That’s something we appreciated more than we expected.

Our Winner: North Ibiza 🏆

That said, families can absolutely enjoy the south. There are fantastic family resorts and beaches there too.

It’s simply a question of atmosphere.

What About Nightlife?

This is where the south wins by a mile.

If nightlife is an important part of your holiday, staying in the south puts you much closer to many of Ibiza’s famous clubs, beach clubs and nightlife areas.

The north is much quieter at night.

That’s perfect if you’re travelling with younger children or simply don’t want to hear music late into the night.

Winner: South Ibiza 🏆

North Ibiza vs South Ibiza for Hotels

Both areas have a good range of accommodation, but the type of hotels differs.

North Ibiza

You’ll find plenty of family-oriented resorts and hotels around:

• Es Canar
• Santa Eulària
• Es Figueral
• Portinatx

We stayed at Leonardo Royal Suites Ibiza Santa Eulalia in Es Canar, and it worked extremely well for our family.

Having the beach directly in front of the hotel meant we could easily combine exploring with relaxed pool and beach time.

South Ibiza

The south has a much larger selection of:

• Luxury resorts
• Beachfront hotels
• All-inclusive resorts
• Boutique hotels
• Adults-focused properties
• Party hotels

If your hotel is going to be a major part of your holiday, the south offers an enormous amount of choice.

Is North Ibiza Cheaper Than South Ibiza?

This is one area where I’d be careful about making a blanket statement.

North Ibiza isn’t necessarily cheap, particularly during July and August.

However, you can often find better value in family-oriented areas such as Es Canar, Santa Eulària and Portinatx compared with some of the island’s most exclusive southern resorts.

The south also has a wider selection of luxury accommodation, which can push average prices considerably higher.

Your biggest savings will usually come from booking early, choosing your dates carefully and comparing accommodation options rather than simply choosing north or south.

North Ibiza vs South Ibiza: Activities

Both sides offer plenty to do, but the experiences are different.

Things to Do in South Ibiza

• Visit Ibiza Town
• Explore Dalt Vila

• Explore Ses Salines
• Enjoy beach clubs
• Take boat trips

And, of course, Dalt Vila isn’t technically north or south—it’s in Ibiza Town, so wherever you stay, it’s worth making time for it.

So, Which Should You Choose?

Here’s our simple answer.

Choose North Ibiza If…

You are travelling with children.

The calmer atmosphere and family-friendly beaches make it an easy choice.

You love nature.

The northern coastline is full of pine forests, cliffs, coves and beautiful countryside.

You enjoy snorkeling.

Cala Xarraca and Portinatx were two of our favourite places to get into the water.

You prefer quieter evenings.

After a full day exploring, we loved returning to Es Canar and slowing down.

You plan to rent a car.

Having a car makes exploring the north particularly enjoyable.

Choose South Ibiza If…

You want nightlife.

You’ll be closer to many of the island’s famous clubs and nightlife areas.

Beach clubs are part of your dream holiday.

The south has much more choice.

You want luxury.

Some of Ibiza’s most luxurious hotels and resorts are located in the south.

You want to stay close to Ibiza Town.

This is particularly useful if exploring Dalt Vila, restaurants and the town is high on your list.

You’re visiting Ibiza for the first time and want the famous sights.

The south puts many of the island’s best-known attractions within easy reach.

What About Staying Somewhere in Between?

This is something worth considering.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between a remote northern beach and the busiest parts of the south.

Santa Eulària des Riu and Es Canar can be excellent bases for families who want a quieter atmosphere while still being able to drive around the island.

That’s essentially what we did.

We stayed in Es Canar and used our rental car to explore both directions.

Some days we headed north to Portinatx and Cala Xarraca.

Other days we drove south towards Cala Comte, Cala Bassa or Es Vedrà.

For us, this was the best of both worlds.

Our Recommendation

If we had to choose again for a family holiday, we’d still choose North Ibiza.

Not because the beaches are necessarily more beautiful—the south has some spectacular ones—but because we preferred the overall pace.

Our week was about swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, discovering new beaches and enjoying time together as a family.

We weren’t looking for nightlife.

We wanted to explore Ibiza without feeling rushed, and the north gave us exactly that.

Es Canar turned out to be a particularly good compromise, because we could enjoy a peaceful family base while still reaching the rest of the island by car.

Final Thoughts

Before visiting Ibiza, we thought we’d have to choose between a quiet family holiday and experiencing the island’s famous beaches and scenery.

We didn’t.

By staying in Es Canar and renting a car, we had the best of both worlds.

We could spend one day snorkeling in the north, another watching the sunset at Es Vedrà, and another exploring Ibiza Town before heading back to our quieter base.

So, North Ibiza vs South Ibiza?

For our family, the north wins.

But if your idea of Ibiza involves beach clubs, nightlife, luxury hotels and lively evenings, the south may be exactly what you’re looking for.

The good news is that you don’t really have to choose one forever. Stay where your holiday style fits best, rent a car, and explore the other side during your trip.
