If you’re going to sleep in Óbidos, sleep inside the walls. We stayed at Rainha Santa Isabel in July 2022 with our boys aged 9 and 6, on a 10-day trip around Portugal by public transport, and the location alone made the stop. We walked out of the front door onto Rua Direita, the main street, and had the town almost to ourselves once the day-trippers had gone. The hotel has since been renamed Rainha Santa Isabel – Óbidos History Hotel.
Quick verdict
- Location: the best part. It’s on Rua Direita, inside the walls, a few minutes’ walk from the castle and the wall walk.
- The hotel: a small, historic townhouse with about 20 air-conditioned rooms, period wooden furniture and a lounge with a fireplace. Charming rather than modern.
- For families: rooms go up to triples (two single beds plus a double). Children 7 and over are charged as adults, and cots are free for ages 0–3. Check the room layout before you book for four.
- Our verdict: we loved it. Book it for one night to see Óbidos without the crowds.
Rainha Santa Isabel – Óbidos History Hotel – Rua Direita, inside the medieval walls of Óbidos.

Where is Rainha Santa Isabel in Óbidos?
On Rua Direita, the main street that runs from the Porta da Vila gate up to the castle, inside the medieval walls. Everything in Óbidos is on your doorstep: the walls, the castle, the churches, the ginjinha shops. The town inside the walls is pedestrian, so if you’re arriving by car, check the parking arrangements with the hotel when you book. Buses from Lisbon stop just outside the gate.
The hotel: a historic house inside the walls
The building is a traditional Portuguese townhouse with wooden beams, period furniture and a sitting room with leather sofas and a fireplace, which gives it the feel of a home more than a hotel. There are only about 20 rooms, so it’s calm, even in July.
What are the rooms like for a family of four?
We had a room for the four of us.With 4 single beds. On the hotel’s current listing, rooms are doubles, twins or triples (two single beds plus a double), all air-conditioned, with a TV and a minibar. Children aged 7 and over are charged as adults, so a family of four with older kids should check the exact room and price before booking.
Breakfast, parking and the practical details
- Check-in 15:00–23:00, check-out by 11:00.
- Breakfast: we had our breakfast included
- Parking: listed as free. Confirm where when you book, because cars can’t drive through the town.
- Pets aren’t allowed. Cots are free for ages 0–3.
What we liked, and what to know
- Liked: the location, the historic character, and the quiet evening in Óbidos after the crowds left.
- Know before you go: old building, so expect stairs and smaller rooms than a modern hotel. Kids 7+ pay as adults. The main street is busy during the day and during festivals.

Who is Rainha Santa Isabel best for?
Good for: families with school-age kids, couples, anyone spending one night to see Óbidos early and late. Less good for: families who need a pool, a big family suite or step-free access. For a bigger room, look at Josefa d’Óbidos, just outside the gate, with quad rooms. For a splurge, Pousada Castelo Óbidos is in the castle.
