Our kids were at a Los Angeles Lakers camp for the week, which left the two of us with six hours a day and a car.
If you have ever done a sports camp drop-off in a town you do not know, you will recognise the problem. You are not on holiday exactly, but you are not at home either, and there is a whole day to fill before pick-up.
We drove south and found Seal Beach, and it turned out to be the best of those days.
It is the quiet one. After Santa Monica and Venice — both of which we did, and both of which are exhausting — Seal Beach is a small town with a long wooden pier, a three-block main street, and enough space to actually sit down.
Here is what to do with half a day there, what it costs, and why we would go back.
The pier
Seal Beach Pier runs 1,865 feet out into the Pacific — one of the longest wooden piers in California, and the thing the whole town is arranged around.
Its history is more eventful than it looks. It has been rebuilt twice after storm damage, once in the 1930s and again in the 1980s. In 2016 a major fire broke out in the Ruby’s Diner building at the end of the pier, which had already closed in 2013. Most of the wooden structure survived and the pier reopened after about a month, though the far end needed substantial repair.
Walking out and back takes about twenty-five minutes at a wandering pace. From the end you get Long Beach Harbor to the north, the coast running south, and on a clear day Catalina Island.
It is free, it is flat, and it is the single best thing in the town.
Main Street and Old Town
Main Street is a few blocks long and that is the point.
Dozens of shops and cafés along one short strip, running from Pacific Coast Highway down to the pier. You can walk the whole thing in half an hour, which after Hollywood Boulevard feels like a holiday in itself.
Old Town Seal Beach is the residential grid behind it — low houses, no high-rises, and a genuinely different feel from the rest of the Orange County coast.

The Eighth Street lot has pay stations and two electric vehicle charging points.
The one to remember is the flat $4 after 6pm.
Sunset over Long Beach Harbor from the end of the pier, for four dollars of parking, is one of the better cheap evenings in southern California — and it is exactly the sort of thing that never makes a list.
Rates are the same year-round, which is unusual on this coast and worth saying.
The Red Car Museum
A restored century-old trolley car, filled with artefacts from the Pacific Electric “Red Car” system that once connected Southern California’s cities before the freeways.
It is small and it is odd and children tend to like it. Ten minutes, and it explains something about how Los Angeles came to be shaped the way it is.
Check opening days before you plan around it — small local museums keep short and variable hours.
The wildlife and the wetlands
The Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge protects habitat in Anaheim Bay. It sits on the Naval Weapons Station, so public access is restricted and normally only possible on organised tours — check before you plan a visit.
Los Cerritos Wetlands nearby is a protected bird habitat.
And the San Gabriel River Bike Trail runs 28 miles from the coast inland — a serious ride, but the first stretch along the water is easy and flat with children.

Is Seal Beach worth the drive from Los Angeles?
Yes, if what you want is quiet. It is about 45 minutes to an hour from downtown LA, and what you get is a long wooden pier, a small main street, cheap parking and a beach where you can hear yourself think.
No, if you want an event. There are no rides, no boardwalk, no attractions. That is the whole appeal and it is also the whole limitation.
