Sercotel Málaga Review with Kids: Connecting Rooms by the Train Station

We were guests of Sercotel Málaga for this stay. The opinions are our own.

We spent two nights at Hotel Sercotel Málaga at the end of June 2019, with Damian (6) and Marc (3), after a few days in Granada. What we needed was simple: a base next to the stations, close enough to walk to the beach, and room for four people who don’t all go to sleep at the same time. What we got was better than that: two connecting rooms with two bathrooms, and a personal welcome from the moment we walked in.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: families arriving by train or bus, and short city stays with kids.
  • The room setup to ask for: connecting rooms, one twin and one double, with two bathrooms.
  • Location: on Calle Héroe de Sostoa, next to the train station and about 5 minutes from the bus station. The beach is 10 minutes on foot and the historic centre about 20.
  • Not to be confused with: Sercotel Rosaleda Málaga, a different, newer Sercotel hotel in the city.

Where is Sercotel Málaga and how do you get there?

Sercotel Málaga is at Calle Héroe de Sostoa 17, right by Málaga’s main train station, and about a 5-minute walk from the bus station. For a family arriving with bags and tired children, that’s the whole point: you’re at the door in minutes, without a taxi. The beach is about 10 minutes on foot, and the historic centre, with the cathedral and the old town, about 20.

The arrival experience

Beatriz, the hotel’s guest experience manager, greeted us by name, and our rooms were already ready. She gave us a welcome pack with ideas for things to do in the city and around it. It was also Beatriz who sent us to the beach that first evening for espetos, sardines grilled over an olive-wood fire, which turned out to be the best tip of the trip. More on that in our Málaga with kids guide.

Our rooms: connecting, with two bathrooms

We had two connecting rooms: a twin room for the boys and a double for us, each with its own bathroom. In practice it’s everything you’d have in one family room, doubled. Two bathrooms in the morning with two small kids is worth more than any facility in a brochure. And the door between the rooms meant the boys could go to sleep while we still had a light on next door.

The boys found a kids’ welcome kit waiting, with sweets and fruit. In our room there was a fruit salad, water and a welcome letter. Small things, but they set the tone for the stay.

A hotel-industry tip: connecting rooms are rarely bookable as a room type online. Book two rooms, then email the hotel straight away asking for them to connect, and mention the children’s ages. Every hotel has only a few, so the earlier you ask, the better your chances.

Food and drinks

Breakfast is served near reception, inside or out on a terrace with a green area, which is the nicer option on a summer morning. There was plenty of choice for the boys, who were happiest with their ColaCao.

Good to know before you book

  • Check-in from 14:00. Check-out by 12:00.
  • Pets: allowed, €10 a night, up to 15 kg.
  • Fitness room on site.
  • Two Sercotels in Málaga: this is Hotel Sercotel Málaga on Héroe de Sostoa. Sercotel Rosaleda Málaga is a different, newer hotel. Check the address before you pay.

Is Sercotel Málaga worth it with kids?

Yes, for a short city stay, especially if you arrive by train or bus. The location saves you taxis, the connecting rooms solve the family-of-four problem, and the welcome made our boys feel like the hotel was expecting them. Look elsewhere if you want to step straight onto the sand, or wake up in the middle of the old town. For those, see where to stay on the Costa del Sol.
