Things to Do in Tapia de Casariego with Kids: Beach & Surf

Things to Do in Tapia de Casariego with Kids

Tapia de Casariego is the last Asturian harbour town before Galicia, and the far western end of our July 2021 road trip with Damian (8) and Marc (5). It’s about an hour from our base in Novellana. It’s a small fishing port with a lighthouse on an island at the harbour mouth, a line of beaches and a serious surf scene.

The short version

  • Where: far western Asturias, 37 km past Luarca.
  • Best beach for kids: Playa de Anguileiro, with lifeguards, toilets and showers in season.
  • Free extra: a municipal seawater pool among the rocks.
  • Pair it with: Luarca on the way back.

The lighthouse island

Tapia’s lighthouse, built in 1859, stands on the Isla del Faro at the entrance to the harbour. Walk out towards it for views back over the town and along the coast.

Beaches in Tapia de Casariego

  • Playa de Anguileiro (Los Campos): about 400 metres long, and at high tide it joins with two smaller beaches. It has lifeguards, showers and toilets, so it’s the family choice.
  • Murallón, Furadas and Ribeiría: three small coves closer to the village, busier with locals and teenagers.
  • Piscina marina: a free seawater pool built into the rocks, which calms things down when the waves are big.

Surfing in Tapia

Tapia is one of the best-known surf spots in Asturias and hosts an international surf championship every Easter. Watching the surfers from the promenade is entertainment in itself for children. For lessons, book with a local surf school on arrival.

The harbour and Paseo La Guardia

The Paseo La Guardia promenade runs past the beaches to the old port, which was a whaling harbour in the Middle Ages. Today it’s lined with sidrerías and bars, and it’s the obvious place to end the afternoon.

Tapia and Luarca in one day

Tapia is 37 km from Luarca. From a base between Cudillero and Luarca, drive out to Tapia in the morning, spend the middle of the day at the beach, and stop in Luarca on the way back.
