L’Aquàrium de Barcelona sits in Port Vell, at the bottom of La Rambla, and it is the most expensive family outing in this city that isn’t a theme park.
That’s not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to buy the right ticket, which most families don’t, because the cheapest one is only sold online and nobody mentions it at the gate.
Here’s what it costs, what the money buys, and the honest answer on whether it’s worth it.
Where to stay in Barcelona — our three picks
Generator Barcelona – private family rooms at hostel prices, five minutes from Passeig de Gràcia and metro Diagonal (L3/L5). Rooms are small and the bar downstairs is lively, so ask for a higher floor.

What it costs — and the €25 you can save
Standard one-day tickets. Prices verified September 2026, and they’re the same online as at the ticket office:

Read the first line again. “General” starts at eleven. Your eleven-year-old pays the same €29 as you do. This is unusual in Barcelona and it catches families out constantly — at the Sagrada Família children are free under 11, at Casa Batlló under 12, at MNAC and Museu Blau under 16, and at the Picasso museum under 18. The aquarium is the exception.

These are sold online only. Turn up at the door and you pay the individual prices. Ten minutes on your phone in the hotel that morning saves a family of four €18, and more if one of your children has just turned eleven.
Check which ages the pack’s “children” covers before you buy — if it means 5–10 and you have a twelve-year-old, do the sum both ways.
The FlexiTicket
€34 adult, €26 child 5–10, €16 child 3–4, €29 senior. It costs €5 more and is valid for 90 days rather than a fixed date.
Worth it if you’re booking weeks ahead for a trip where the weather might change your plans — it turns the aquarium into your rainy-day card rather than a fixed appointment. Not worth it if you already know which day you’re going.
The combined ticket most people miss
Las Golondrinas, the harbour boats that leave from Moll de les Drassanes five minutes’ walk away, sell a combined boat-and-aquarium ticket at €35. The aquarium alone is €29 and the boat alone is €19, so you’re getting the harbour trip for €6.

What the money actually buys
It’s one of Europe’s larger aquariums and the collection is genuinely good, but the thing people come for is the Oceanarium — a big open tank with an 80-metre glass tunnel running through the bottom of it, and a moving walkway that carries you along while sharks and rays go over your head.
That tunnel is the whole experience for a child. Everything else is nice; that is the bit they’ll talk about on the way home.
The rest is a walk through Mediterranean and tropical habitats, a penguin area, and Planeta Aqua and Explora! — the hands-on sections aimed at younger children, which are the best value in the building if yours are under eight.
Is it worth €29?
The honest answer, and it depends entirely on who you’re bringing.
Worth it:
- Children aged roughly 4 to 10, who will be genuinely delighted by the tunnel
- A rainy day, when a €109 indoor afternoon starts to look reasonable
- Combined with Las Golondrinas, which makes a proper half-day out of it
- Anyone who has never been in a shark tunnel
Think twice:
- With teenagers who have seen an aquarium before — €29 each is a lot for a shrug
- On a beautiful day, when the beach is free and twenty minutes away
- If you’re on a tight budget and haven’t done Museu Blau yet — that’s €6 for adults, free for under-16s, and it’s a natural history museum with a similar appeal for a fraction of the cost
Put plainly: this is the one Barcelona attraction where the family-of-four price is genuinely high, so it deserves a decision rather than a default. If it’s the thing your children most want to do, do it and buy the pack. If it’s on the list because it’s on everyone’s list, there are better ways to spend €109 here.

It’s in Port Vell, which means the surrounding area is a shopping centre with a sea view — one of the parts of Barcelona we’d tell you to skip. Do the aquarium, do the boat, then walk back up into the Gothic Quarter or along to the beach for lunch rather than eating there.

They sell two diving experiences in the shark tank: a cage dive at €175 for ages 8 and up, and a dive with the sharks at €300 for certified divers.
Well outside the scope of a family day out, but if you have a shark-obsessed eight-year-old and a significant birthday coming, it exists and it’s the kind of thing they remember for twenty years.
