Quick answer
- Park Güell is split in two. The Monumental Zone — the dragon staircase, the mosaic bench, the Hypostyle Room, the gatehouses — is ticketed. The rest of the park, which is most of it, is free to walk into.
- Tickets are €18 adult, €13.50 for ages 7–12 and over-65s, free under 7.
- Entry is timed. You get a 30-minute window from the slot on your ticket, and once you leave you cannot go back in.
- Barcelona residents go free, all of it, through the Passi Verd scheme — but you have to register the same day, you can’t book ahead.
- With kids: the free forest section is the better half. Shade, space to run, viaducts, and the best viewpoint in the park. The Monumental Zone is a photo queue.
Where to stay in Barcelona — our three picks
Generator Barcelona – private family rooms at hostel prices, five minutes from Passeig de Gràcia and metro Diagonal (L3/L5). Rooms are small and the bar downstairs is lively, so ask for a higher floor.
H10 Cubik – on the edge of the Gothic Quarter, with the Atic rooftop terrace and pool. You can walk to the cathedral, the beach and the Born from the door, which saves you metro tickets all week.
The Cotton House Hotel, Autograph Collection – the old cotton guild building on Gran Via, a ten-minute walk from Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Família side of Eixample. Quiet, grown-up, and the rooftop is the reason to book it.

What’s free at Park Güell and what isn’t
This is the part almost nobody explains properly, because the sites explaining it are selling tickets.
Needs a ticket (the Monumental Zone, about 12 hectares):
- The dragon staircase and the salamander — the photo everyone comes for
- The serpentine mosaic bench and the main terrace
- The Hypostyle Room with the columns
- The two gatehouse pavilions at the main entrance

Free, always:
- The forest area north of the Monumental Zone
- The three stone viaducts, including the Pont del Pedrís and the Pòrtic dels Caçadors — the arched walkways under the hillside
- Turó de les Tres Creus, the hilltop viewpoint at 182 m with the three crosses. The best view in the park, and it costs nothing.
- The wooded paths and the stone gardens
So: if you want the salamander photo, buy the ticket. If you want a walk, a view over Barcelona and somewhere for kids to burn an hour, you don’t need one at all.
As a resident every time I went for free with our kids and sincerely even if I would have to pay, I would do it. The park is spectacular and it is worth to be visited at least 1 time.

Barcelona residents get in free — how the Passi Verd works
If you live in Barcelona, the whole park including the Monumental Zone is free through the Passi Verd scheme, which replaced the earlier resident scheme in March 2026.
- You register with your official ID number at parkguell.barcelona
- Same-day only — there’s no advance booking for residents
- Residents of the six neighbourhoods immediately around the park get a permanent resident card and skip the booking entirely
I’ve been with kids on another resident program, which was offered before the pandemics, now instead after all the changes we haven’t been.

Getting there — and the hill nobody warns you about
Getting to Park Guell is not an easy task if you stay in the city center, but still it is worth it.
You have several options to get there:
Metro: option Lesseps (L3) and walking up, option Vallcarca (L3) with the outdoor escalators.
Bus: it is the easiest option, the 24bus stops close by
Hop on Hop off bus – has a stop straight by the entrance.
Taxi
Opening hours and timed entry
The park opens at 9:00, with the last entry slot in the evening — around 19:30 in July and August, earlier in winter.
Two rules that catch people out:
- You have 30 minutes from your slot time to get through the access point. Miss it and the ticket is gone.
- No re-entry. Once you walk out of the Monumental Zone you’re out. Do the free part first or last, not in the middle.
When to go
During these 16 years of living in Barcelona, we’ve been here in all seasons. It is beatiful to spend time in any season. Still, Spring is our favourite.
With toddlers, with school-age kids, with teens
Kids enjoy the park for the first 15-20minutes, be prepared that you will admire the park the most. As well, depending if it is too crowded it will be less enjoyable for them.
Is Park Güell worth it?
Yes, totally. With kids or alone, it is always worth it.
