If you’re nervous about the sea and you have small children, Cala Llenya is the beach I’d send you to.
It sits on Ibiza’s east coast, five minutes north of Cala Nova and about ten from Es Canar, tucked into a bay with pine trees running right down behind the sand. The water is shallow, clear and — unlike the open bay next door — properly sheltered. It stays calm on days when Cala Nova doesn’t.
Parking is good, but come before 10:00 in July and August. After that you’re waiting.
Cala Llenya at a glance
- Where: east coast, 5 min from Cala Nova, ~10 from Es Canar

- Shade: pine trees behind the sand, which is rarer than it sounds on Ibiza
- Facilities: beach bar, sunbeds, toilets, parking, lifeguards in summer
- Best for: toddlers, nervous swimmers, a slow afternoon, picnics
- Not for: anyone wanting restaurants, a scene, or things to do

Why Cala Llenya Is the One for Young Families
Ibiza has more beautiful beaches than Cala Llenya. Cala Saladeta is more dramatic, Cala d’Hort has the Es Vedrà view, Cala Benirràs has the sunsets.
What Cala Llenya has is something none of those do: it is small enough to see across, shallow enough to stand up in a long way out, and sheltered enough that the water is reliably flat.
If you’ve ever spent a beach day standing in the shallows rather than sitting down, because you couldn’t quite see your child and the water had a bit of movement in it — this is the beach where you get to sit down.
We came here after a morning at Cala Nova, wanting something slower. There was plenty of room, the boys swam, and the afternoon went quiet in the best way. It was the most restful few hours of the week.
The Water
Shallow, clear, and calm. The bay is enclosed enough that it stays protected when the more exposed beaches on this coast get chop.
That is genuinely the whole selling point, and it’s why it’s worth the extra five minutes from Cala Nova on a windy day.
There are lifeguards in summer.
Facilities at Cala Llenya
- Beach bar
- Sunbeds for hire
- Toilets
- Parking
- Lifeguards in season
That’s the lot, and the shortness of that list is the trade. There’s one small beach bar, not a restaurant scene. If you want lunch out, eat at Cala Nova and come here afterwards, or bring a picnic — this is a good picnic beach, which most Ibiza calas aren’t.
The pine trees behind the sand give you actual natural shade. On an island where most beaches offer none, that matters more than it sounds — particularly with young children in July.
Parking at Cala Llenya
Good, and generally easier than Cala Nova. Still: before 10:00 in July and August.
Cala Llenya vs Cala Nova
Five minutes apart, and genuinely different beaches rather than two versions of the same one.
| Cala Llenya | Cala Nova | |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Quiet and peaceful | Lively but relaxed |
| Sand | Fine golden sand | Fine golden sand |
| Water | Crystal clear, sheltered, reliably calm | Crystal clear, but exposed — gets waves |
| Shade | Pine trees behind the sand | Very little |
| Food | One small beach bar | Two proper beachfront restaurants |
| Family rating | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ with older kids, ★★★☆☆ with toddlers |
| Parking | Good | Good, fills by 10:00 in summer |
| Best for | A slow afternoon, small children | A full beach day |
The short version: Cala Nova if you want space, food and a full day out. Cala Llenya if you want calm water and quiet. Do both — Cala Nova first, Cala Llenya after lunch.

Final Thoughts
Cala Llenya won’t be the beach you photograph most on an Ibiza trip. It’ll probably be the one where you actually relaxed.
If your children are small, or one of them is a nervous swimmer, or the wind has picked up and the open bays look unappealing — this is where to go. It’s five minutes from a more famous beach and it does one thing better than almost anywhere on the island.

Is Cala Llenya good for young children?
Yes — it is the beach we would recommend first for toddlers and nervous swimmers on Ibiza’s east coast. The bay is sheltered, the water is shallow and reliably calm, the beach is small enough to see across, and there are lifeguards in summer.
Is Cala Llenya better than Cala Nova?
For calm water and quiet, yes. For food, space and a full beach day, Cala Nova is better. Cala Nova is an open bay that gets waves when the wind is up, while Cala Llenya stays sheltered. They are five minutes apart, so most people should do both.
Is there parking at Cala Llenya?
Yes, and it is generally easier than at Cala Nova. In July and August it still fills by mid-morning, so arrive before 10:00.
Are there restaurants at Cala Llenya?
There is one small beach bar. If you want a proper lunch, eat at Cala Nova five minutes away, or bring a picnic — Cala Llenya is one of the better picnic beaches on Ibiza thanks to the pine shade behind the sand.
