Es Canar is a small resort on Ibiza’s east coast, about fifteen minutes north of Santa Eulalia, and it’s where we based ourselves for a week in July 2026 with a 13-year-old and a 10-year-old.
It was the right call, and I’ll tell you exactly why — and who it would be the wrong call for.
The short version: a calm, shallow, family-sized beach; a seafront promenade you can walk end to end in about fifteen minutes; enough restaurants that half board never felt like a trap; a hippy market on Wednesdays that’s the one thing this place is genuinely famous for; and almost nothing happening after about ten at night.
If that last part reads as a warning, Es Canar isn’t your resort. If it reads as a relief, keep going.

Is Es Canar Right for You?
This is the actual question, so let’s answer it before anything else.
Es Canar suits you if: you want the beach within walking distance of your hotel, you’re travelling with children under about fifteen, you’re hiring a car and driving out most days, and you’d rather eat well in the same handful of restaurants than have endless choice.
Es Canar doesn’t suit you if: you want nightlife you can walk to, you’re not hiring a car, you’re travelling as a couple looking for atmosphere, or you want somewhere different to eat every night.
How it compares with the alternatives
Santa Eulalia is bigger, more polished, and has considerably more restaurants and shops. The trade-off is that you’re further from a beach you’d actually want to swim at. If your children are older and you want a town in the evenings, it’s the better choice.
San Antonio is cheaper and livelier, with the famous sunsets. We ruled it out deliberately — with a 13-year-old and a 10-year-old we didn’t want to navigate around the nightlife, and I’ve never regretted that decision.
Playa d’en Bossa has everything on the doorstep: the big all-inclusives, the water parks, the clubs. It’s also the loudest place on the island. Brilliant if that’s what you came for.
Portinatx and the northern coves are quieter still than Es Canar, and more beautiful, but you’re further from everything and the choice of hotels is thin.

Es Canar Beach
A sheltered bay of golden sand with shallow, calm water — the kind of beach where you can see your children from wherever you’ve dropped the towels.
It is not the most beautiful beach on Ibiza. Cala Saladeta and Cala d’Hort are, and it isn’t close. What Es Canar has instead is that it’s there — and across a week where we drove to a different cala almost every day, this was the beach we actually swam at most, because it took no effort at all.
My own favourite thing about it was walking it early, before the day started and before anyone else was up.

The Punta Arabí Hippy Market
The one thing Es Canar is genuinely known for, and it’s been running since 1973.
When: Wednesdays, April to October, 10:00 to 18:00.
That’s it — one day a week. If the market is a reason you’re coming, build your week around a Wednesday, because there is no second chance.
What’s there: handmade jewellery, clothing, leather goods, local artwork, souvenirs you won’t find in the resort shops, plus live music and food stalls.
Practical: go early. By midday in July the coaches have arrived from across the island and it stops being a browse and becomes a shuffle.
Best Things to Do in Es Canar
1. The beach
Covered above. Swim, repeat.
2. Rent a catamaran with a slide ⭐
€25 an hour for four people.
This was the best €25 of our entire holiday. A small catamaran with a slide off the back — the boys went up and down it until they were exhausted, in water clear enough to see the bottom from the deck.
If you do one thing in Es Canar, do this.
3. Kayaking and paddleboards
Rentals directly from the beach. Affordable, beginner-friendly, and the coastline either side of the bay is worth paddling out to see.
Go in the morning — the sea is calmest before the afternoon wind picks up.
4. Walk the seafront promenade
Ice cream shops, restaurants, souvenir stalls, cocktail bars and small supermarkets, end to end in about fifteen minutes.
This was our evening, most evenings. It’s not exciting and it isn’t trying to be. With kids after a long beach day, that’s the point.
5. Boat trips
Excursions leave from the small harbour to nearby beaches and coves, and there are ferries across to Santa Eulalia and Cala Llonga — a good way to spend a day without getting back in the car.
6. Explore the nearby beaches
All within a short drive:
- Cala Nova — five minutes, our favourite of the two, turquoise water and beachfront restaurants
- Cala Llenya — five minutes, quieter, pine trees behind the sand, the calmest water of the lot
- Cala Mastella — a small, peaceful cove that stays popular with locals
- Aguas Blancas — dramatic cliffs and the best scenery of the group
- Cala Boix and Cala Xarraca — both worth the drive

Where We Stayed
Leonardo Royal Suites Ibiza Santa Eulalia, in a quad deluxe superior sea-view room — twin beds, a sofa bed for the boys, and a balcony over the beach and pools. We took half board: a Mediterranean buffet that changed every evening, live cooking stations, and daily entertainment around the pool.
The beach is ten metres from the hotel. That single fact is why we chose it over everything in Santa Eulalia.

Where to Eat in Es Canar
Four we’d go back to:
- Marvent — Mediterranean and seafood
- Restaurante Las Arenas — beachfront, fresh fish and rice dishes
- Jacaranda Lounge — cocktails, international menu, sea views
- Atzaró Beach — a short drive towards Cala Nova, and the most stylish option of the four. A beach club rather than a restaurant, priced accordingly
Es Canar isn’t a food destination and I won’t pretend otherwise. What it has is enough good places that a week of half board plus a few nights out felt like plenty rather than a compromise.
Practical Tips
- Get to the beach early in July and August — the good spots go before mid-morning
- Book water sports for the morning, when the sea is calmest
- Bring water shoes if you’re exploring the rockier coves nearby
- Hire a car. You don’t need one to enjoy Es Canar itself, but you need one to enjoy Ibiza
- Build your week around a Wednesday if you want the hippy market
- Don’t plan late nights. Es Canar closes early, and that’s the deal
Is Es Canar Worth It? Our Verdict
It exceeded what we expected, and it’s the part of Ibiza I’d go back to first.
What sold it wasn’t any single attraction. It was that the beach was ten metres from the room, the promenade absorbed every evening without effort, the whole island was inside an hour’s drive, and after a day out we could come back to somewhere quiet.
Ibiza’s reputation is built on about four square kilometres of it. Es Canar is the other version — and honestly, it’s the better one.

Not to enjoy Es Canar itself — the beach, the promenade and the restaurants are all walkable. You do need one to see the rest of Ibiza, because most of the best beaches are not on a bus route. Nowhere on the island is more than about an hour’s drive from Es Canar.
What are the best beaches near Es Canar?
Cala Nova and Cala Llenya are both about five minutes away and are the two we returned to most. Cala Mastella is a small, quiet cove popular with locals, and Aguas Blancas has the most dramatic scenery. Cala Boix and Cala Xarraca are also within a short drive.
How many days should you spend in Es Canar?
Three to five days is enough to enjoy Es Canar itself and explore the east and north coasts. We stayed seven and used it as a base to drive the whole island, which we would do again.
