When we landed at Changi in April 2023, we walked through the airport and saw how beautiful it was, but we couldn’t stop. It was my birthday and Marc’s, and we were rushing to the hotel on Sentosa to celebrate. So we made a plan: on our last day in Singapore, we would come back early and spend the day at the airport.
That’s what this guide is: how to spend a full day at Changi Airport with kids before your flight home. It covers what’s free, what costs money, and the thing most “Changi with kids” lists don’t tell you, which is that half the best attractions are only open to passengers who have already checked in.
Changi Airport with kids: the short version
- Landside (anyone can go): Jewel Changi, with the Rain Vortex waterfall (free) and Canopy Park (S$8).
- Airside (boarding pass needed): the Butterfly Garden (T3) and the Sunflower and Enchanted Gardens (T2). All are free and open 24 hours.
- The trick for a departure day: leave your bags in Jewel’s luggage storage, spend the morning in Jewel, check in as soon as your airline’s early check-in opens, and go through immigration after lunch.
- Emirates passengers can use early check-in at Jewel from 12:00 to 22:00 on the day of departure, up to 3 hours before the flight.
- Canopy Park’s nets and mazes cost extra, and the nets have a 110 cm minimum height.

How to plan a departure day at Changi with kids
The mistake is arriving three hours before your flight, which is what most people do, and seeing none of it. Changi has two halves:

So the day goes: Jewel in the morning, lunch, check in and go through immigration, gardens in the afternoon, rest before the flight. Your bags are the problem. Jewel has luggage storage for the morning, and early check-in takes the bags off your hands once it opens. For the Emirates flight back to Europe, the Jewel early check-in lounge (Level 1) takes Emirates passengers from 12:00 to 22:00 on the day of departure, until 3 hours before the flight. Passengers on EK353, which departs at 00:30, can check in the day before. Other airlines have different windows, so check yours.
Morning: Jewel Changi and the Rain Vortex
We started at Jewel. The Rain Vortex is the indoor waterfall falling through the middle of the building, surrounded by terraces of plants. It’s the most photogenic spot at Changi and it costs nothing to see.
- Waterfall hours: 10:00–22:00 daily. Jewel itself is open 24 hours.
- Light and sound show: 20:00 and 21:00 Monday to Thursday, plus 22:00 at weekends and on public holidays. If your flight is late, this is a great last hour in Singapore.
- Best view for kids: the upper-level railings, or Basement 2 to see the water crash into the funnel up close.
Is Canopy Park worth it for kids?
Canopy Park is on Level 5 of Jewel, at the top of the building. It’s the best place at Changi for kids to burn off energy before a long flight, and it’s air-conditioned.
What the S$8 ticket gets you (same price for adults and children aged 3–12):
- Discovery Slides
- Foggy Bowls
- Petal Garden
- Topiary Walk
What costs extra: the Hedge Maze, Mirror Maze, Canopy Bridge, Bouncing Net and Walking Net are separately ticketed, and buying any of them includes Canopy Park entry. The Discovery Slides, Bouncing Net and Walking Net have a 110 cm minimum height, which matters for younger kids. Opening hours are 10:00–21:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00–22:00 Friday to Sunday, with last entry 30 minutes before closing.
For our boys, 7 and 9 at the time, this was the right age. With a toddler under 110 cm, the basic ticket is enough, and the nets are worth skipping.
Lunch and shopping
Changi has everything from Singaporean classics to international chains, both in Jewel and in the terminals. Shopping passed the time too, and some shops have airport-only offers.
Changi Airport is famous for its themed gardens — and visiting them is ideal for families.
Afternoon: the Butterfly, Sunflower and Enchanted Gardens
After immigration, the gardens are what makes Changi different from any airport we’ve flown through. Each is in a different terminal, and moving between them turned into a small adventure for the kids.
- Butterfly Garden (Terminal 3, transit, Levels 2–3): more than 1,000 butterflies from around 40 species, with a 6-metre grotto waterfall. This is the one to prioritise with kids.
- Sunflower Garden (Terminal 2, transit, Level 3): bright and open, with views of the runway and aircraft.
- Enchanted Garden (Terminal 2, transit, Level 2): giant glass bouquet sculptures and a koi pond with the sound of running water.
All three are free and open 24 hours, but only to passengers who have gone through immigration. If you’re only visiting Jewel, you won’t be able to reach them.
Evening: rest before the flight
We finished the day in an airport lounge. The kids watched a movie while we had snacks, a drink and some quiet time. After a day on your feet, arriving at the gate calm is worth a lot, especially before a long-haul flight.
Changi also has nursing rooms, play areas and rest zones in the terminals, so you’ll find somewhere to sit down even without a lounge.
Can you leave Changi Airport during a layover?
We didn’t have a layover. Singapore was our destination, and our flights connected through Dubai with Emirates (our Emirates economy review). If you do have a long layover at Changi, Jewel is the easy win, because it’s connected to Terminal 1 and you don’t need to go into the city. Leaving the airport means going through immigration, so check Singapore’s entry requirements for your passport first. With kids, I wouldn’t try it with less than about 6 hours.
Our verdict
Spending our last day at Changi on purpose was the right call, and it’s how I’d plan any departure day from Singapore with kids: Jewel first, check in early, gardens after immigration.

Changi Airport with Kids FAQ
Is Changi Airport good for kids?
Yes. Changi is one of the easiest airports in the world to spend time in with children: Jewel has the free Rain Vortex waterfall and Canopy Park, and the transit area has free gardens including a Butterfly Garden with more than 1,000 butterflies. There are also nursing rooms, play areas and rest zones in the terminals.
Can you visit the Butterfly Garden at Changi without a boarding pass?
No. The Butterfly Garden in Terminal 3 and the Sunflower and Enchanted Gardens in Terminal 2 are all in the transit area, so you can only reach them after checking in and going through immigration. They are free and open 24 hours.
How much is Canopy Park at Jewel Changi?
Canopy Park admission is S$8 for adults and children aged 3 to 12, and covers the Discovery Slides, Foggy Bowls, Petal Garden and Topiary Walk. The Hedge Maze, Mirror Maze, Canopy Bridge, Bouncing Net and Walking Net are ticketed separately, and some attractions have a 110 cm minimum height.

Can you check in early at Changi Airport?
Yes. The early check-in lounge on Level 1 of Jewel serves many Terminal 1 airlines, generally from 3 to 24 hours before departure depending on the airline. Emirates passengers can check in there from 12pm to 10pm on the day of departure, up to 3 hours before the flight.
How much time do you need at Jewel Changi with kids?
Plan at least half a day if you want the Rain Vortex, Canopy Park and a meal without rushing. We spent our whole last day in Singapore at Changi, with Jewel in the morning and the transit gardens after immigration.
Can you leave Changi Airport during a layover?
You can if you clear immigration, so check Singapore’s entry requirements for your passport first. Jewel is connected to Terminal 1 and needs no trip into the city, which makes it the easiest option; with children we would not leave the airport with less than about six hours.
