We’ve been coming to Ciutadella since the boys could walk, and it’s still the park I send visiting families to first. Seventy acres of it, free, ten minutes from the Gothic Quarter, with a zoo attached and enough shade to survive an August afternoon.

Opening hours and what it costs

The park itself is free and open every day from 10am till 11.30pm. Inside the park, only the zoo charges. Everything else — the lake, the Cascada, the playgrounds, the Hivernacle glasshouse — costs nothing.

The boating lake

The price is per how many people are getting into the boat. The maximum is 5pax and the time is 30min per boat.

La Cascada and the rest

The Baroque monumental fountain at the north end — Gaudí worked on it as a student — with a pond in front of it. It’s the picture everyone takes and it’s genuinely worth walking to.

Also inside the park: the Castell dels Tres Dragons, the early-modernist building that housed the Zoological Museum; L’Hivernacle, the iron-and-glass glasshouse; the Parliament of Catalonia; and the mammoth statue, which is the single most reliable way to make a four-year-old happy in Barcelona.
