When you hear Norway, you are mostly thinking about Fjords. There are very few things talked about Oslo. We had to google a lot, read tons of articles, and even though we didn’t find something special for us, as there were few things written for families with kids. Thanks to Visit Oslo (Oslo Visitor Center) we went well prepared. They gave us a very detailed information of things to do and to visit while in Oslo, and that kids to be entertained during our stay.
Our accommodation was 30 min from Oslo. This is the reason we dedicated only 2 days from our holiday in Norway to Oslo. And rest of the days we were keen to discover other villages and towns. More posts still to come, but now about Oslo.
1st day.
Our first stop in Oslo was Opera House. OMG, what a beauty, and what views you can see from the rooftop. The building is located in the Bjørvika neighborhood of central Oslo, at the head of the Oslofjord. All white, that even in not sunny days you need a pair of sunglasses, because of high albedo. Once on the top, the Fjord of Oslo is open to your panorama, and all the city is like on a palm. Love such views. We heard that Opera House is amazing inside as well, but we were in a hurry to see more places and we didn’t explore interior of the building.
After Opera House, we wanted to discover the Parliament. We took a map, but even with the map, we got lost. Sometimes it happens during travels, that if you get lost, there is not much to see in the city, but this wasn’t the case. We enjoyed our strolling through the streets a lot. Oslo is about a perfect combination of new buildings and old.
Our next stop was the port, just in front of the City Hall. Well, I think, there is no much need to say, about our love to boats. Oslo is not an exception. We took a moment to inform about how to get to Bygdøy for our next day in Oslo. As our idea, was to take a ferry and make some hop on and hop off, and enjoy the Oslofjord from the ferry.
City Hall, an amazing building, that I would say has the best views, on Oslofjord. We liked strolling around the City Hall, as this is city center, and there are a lot of beautiful places to discover with kids.
Our next stop was The Royal Palace. Apart of splendid views that are heading from the front door of the Royal Palace, we visited its’ park. What a pleasure, it seemed like in a fairytale. Very clean park, beautiful scenery, and kids had a plenty of time to enjoy feeding the ducks. I think that this part was the most interesting for our kids.
And finally, our last stop, Parliament. Here I liked a lot the large space that had our kids to run, jump and enjoy our last stop of the day.
2nd day.
On our second day, we went directly to the port. Activated our 24h Oslo Pass (provided by @visitoslo, Oslo Visitor Center), and went directly to Bygdøy on a ferry. Our ferry experience remembered our very first ferry experience in USA. Same picturesque fields, same type of houses, same boats. We stopped at Bygdøy.
People who follow us on socials, already knows how amazing is Oslo Pass, and all the advantages we had while visiting Oslo. We had the opportunity to navigate on a ferry, and public transport for free, the price is included in Oslo Pass. As well, access to more than 30 museums, and different discounts. From all 30, we have visited only 5, but I think it is more than enough for a day.
We didn’t make plans for our second day in Oslo. The idea was to enjoy the pass to the full and try to minimize our walking time outside, as most of the day was raining. Sometimes without plan, things go easier, and much pleasantly.
Norwegian Museum of Cultural History (Norsk Folkemuseum), was our first museum once on Bygdøy. A large open-air museum, with more than 150 buildings, relocated from towns and rural districts. A lot of buildings are open to the public, and we could see typical interiors for buildings of 17th till 19th century.
Our next stop was Viking Ship Museum. The main attractions of the museum are Oseberg ship, Gokstad ship and Tune ship. You can see in the pictures below. I think Damian, loved this museum the most, because, on a wall was displayed a short animation about Vikings provenience, theirs life and the way of being. Cool staff.
If the first two museums were close one to another. Other 3 museums are located further. Even though, we got very quick there, and the rain just stopped.
The Kon-Tiki Museum. Here we found how a Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl used to sail from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. It was great to watch all the adventures this brave person had back in 1947. Marc were sleeping, so he hadn’t the chance to enjoy it.
Fram Museum is about enjoying visiting the vessel Fram interior. The original interior of Fram is intact and visitors can go inside the ship to view it. Damian loved it. He told us that he felt the real feeling of a pirate, hahaha.
Norsk Maritim Museum, was our last stop, there are a lot of thing to see. But, unfortunately we have seen very few, as our kids were too tired and didn’t want to keep discovering. That is why, our next plan was much more pleasant.
We came back to the port in front of City Hall, and there took another ferry, which took us by Oslofjord and we could enjoy seeing lovely islands of Oslo.
I am sure, there were much more things to see and do, and of course we have missed some outstanding parks, but we were happy of having such a pleasant time there.
Big thanks to Oslo Visitor Center, for giving us so many advises, providing us with the Oslo Pass, and for being with us during our stay in Oslo.
Looks like you guys are having a great time. The lil one is so cute haha
