Our Giordano’s Pizza Experience in Chicago
After an incredible morning exploring The Bean and enjoying panoramic city views from 360 Chicago (read our 360 Chicago post here), we were ready for one of the most iconic Chicago experiences — trying the famous deep dish pizza at Giordano’s.
If you visit Chicago and skip Giordano’s, you’re missing one of the city’s most legendary food experiences. It’s not just pizza — it’s a slice of Chicago’s culture, layered in flavor, tradition, and indulgence.

🍕 What Makes Giordano’s Pizza So Famous?
Giordano’s is a Chicago institution, known worldwide for its stuffed deep dish pizza — a pie-like creation filled with layers of cheese, fresh tomato sauce, and a buttery crust that’s both crisp and soft at the same time.
Every pizza takes around 45 minutes to prepare, and once it arrives at your table, you instantly understand why. The first slice is a show in itself — the server lifts it slowly, and you watch the long strings of melted cheese stretch endlessly. It’s rich, warm, and absolutely mouthwatering.
We ordered their classic deep dish pizza with pepperoni and mozzarella, and it was everything we expected — cheesy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with a slightly tangy tomato sauce.
Giordano’s is famous for being one of the original inventors of the stuffed pizza, tracing back to an Italian Easter pie called “scarciedda” — a recipe passed down by the founders’ mother. Since opening in 1974, Giordano’s has become synonymous with Chicago-style pizza.

📍 Location & Atmosphere
There are several Giordano’s locations across Chicago, but we chose the one conveniently located near 360 Chicago, along Magnificent Mile. It was the perfect stop for lunch after a morning of sightseeing.
The atmosphere inside is cozy and family-friendly, with a welcoming staff and Chicago-themed decor. You can even watch chefs preparing pizzas in the open kitchen.
While waiting for our deep dish to bake, we enjoyed some garlic bread and fresh salad — a great way to start while anticipating the main event!

🧀 Is It Really Worth the Hype?
Absolutely — but be prepared for a filling meal! One slice of Giordano’s deep dish pizza feels like a full meal by itself.
It’s not your typical pizza — it’s more like a cheese-filled pie with a crispy base, rich sauce, and generous toppings. For anyone visiting Chicago for the first time, Giordano’s is not just a restaurant, it’s an essential part of the Chicago experience.
If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll love it too — especially watching the cheese stretch when the slices are served!

- Pair your pizza with a local Chicago beer or soda for the full experience.
- Save room for dessert — the tiramisu and chocolate cake are favorites.
- Expect a short waiting line during lunch and dinner hours, especially at tourist locations.

🏙️ A Little History of Giordano’s
The story of Giordano’s began more than 200 years ago in Italy, when Mama Giordano used to bake her famous stuffed Easter pie, a double-crusted dish filled with cheese and meat.
When brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio moved to Chicago, they decided to share their mother’s recipe with the city — opening the first Giordano’s in 1974 on Chicago’s South Side.
Today, Giordano’s operates dozens of restaurants across the U.S., but nothing compares to enjoying a deep dish right in the heart of Chicago.
