Road Trip to Asturias and Cantabria: A Summer Adventure with Kids

Summer 2021 was a season of adventure for our family as we embarked on an epic road trip from Barcelona to the stunning regions of Asturias and Cantabria. Traveling with our two kids, we set out on an 8-hour drive with excitement and anticipation, eager to explore the natural beauty and cultural treasures that awaited us.

The Journey Begins

Our journey began in the bustling city of Barcelona. With our car packed and the kids settled in, we set off on an 8-hour drive, leaving behind the Mediterranean charm of Catalonia. The route led us through diverse landscapes, each more beautiful than the last, as we headed towards the verdant hills and rugged coastlines of northern Spain.

First Stop: Novellana, Cudillero

Our first destination was the charming village of Novellana in the Cudillero municipality of Asturias. After a long drive, the village welcomed us with its serene beauty—traditional Asturian houses, narrow winding streets, and a tranquil ambiance. Our accommodation was a cozy rural house with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, providing a perfect base for our explorations.

Exploring Asturias

Asturias offered a wealth of experiences, from breathtaking coastal scenery to majestic mountains and rich cultural sites. Our stops included:

Lastres

A picturesque fishing village with charming streets and breathtaking views of the Cantabrian Sea. We wandered through the historic center, enjoying the beautiful architecture and the serene harbor.

Valdés

Known for its stunning landscapes and rich history, Valdés was a delightful stop. We explored the town and took in the scenic beauty of its coastal areas.

Tapia de Casariego

A vibrant coastal town famous for its beautiful beaches and excellent surf spots. The kids loved playing on the sandy shores while we enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere.

Saliencia

Located in the heart of the Somiedo Natural Park, Saliencia offered us a chance to immerse ourselves in nature. We hiked through lush landscapes and marveled at the stunning mountain views.

Cudillero

Back in Cudillero, we explored this colorful fishing village with its steep streets and vibrant houses. We indulged in fresh seafood at a seaside restaurant, and the kids loved exploring the village, watching the fishermen, and discovering little shops.

San Juan de la Arena

A small coastal village known for its beautiful beach and peaceful ambiance. We enjoyed a relaxing day by the sea, soaking up the sun and the tranquil surroundings.

Gijón

A bustling city with a rich maritime history. We visited the aquarium, strolled along the beautiful San Lorenzo Beach, and explored the historic Cimavilla neighborhood.

Llanes

A charming coastal town with stunning beaches and a lively atmosphere. We wandered through the historic center, visited the impressive basilica, and enjoyed the vibrant local culture.

Venturing into Cantabria

Our road trip continued into Cantabria, another region renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. Our stops included:

Santander

The capital city of Cantabria, known for its elegant architecture and beautiful bay. We visited the Palacio de la Magdalena, explored the city center, and enjoyed the lovely beaches.

Costa Quebrada

A spectacular stretch of coastline with dramatic cliffs and stunning rock formations. We took in the breathtaking views and captured some amazing photographs.

Palacio de Sobrellano

Located in Comillas, this beautiful palace is a prime example of neo-Gothic architecture. We toured the palace and its lovely gardens, marveling at the intricate details and historical significance.

Parque Natural de Oyambre

A stunning natural park with diverse landscapes, including beaches, dunes, and forests. We enjoyed hiking through the park and observing the rich wildlife.

Playa de Langre

A beautiful, secluded beach known for its impressive cliffs and clear waters. The kids loved playing in the sand, and we appreciated the peaceful, natural surroundings.

Luarca

A picturesque fishing village with charming streets and a lovely harbor. We enjoyed exploring the town, sampling local seafood, and taking in the scenic views.

Comillas

A historic town with beautiful architecture and a rich cultural heritage. We visited the Palacio de Sobrellano and the Capricho de Gaudí, both stunning examples of unique architectural styles.

San Sebastián de Garabandal

Our second stay was in this peaceful village, known for its spiritual significance. We found tranquility in the serene surroundings and enjoyed the hospitality of the locals.

Reflecting on the Journey

As our road trip came to an end, we reflected on the many memories we had created. Traveling with kids can be challenging, but the experiences we shared made every moment worthwhile. From the serene beauty of Novellana to the adventurous spirit of Asturias and the historical charm of Cantabria, our journey was a tapestry of unforgettable moments.

This road trip reminded us that the journey is as important as the destination. As we drove back to Barcelona, we carried with us the sights, sounds, and flavors of northern Spain, promising ourselves that we would return to this enchanting part of the world someday.
