Three Weeks in Moldova: Work, Basketball, OrheiLand, and a Traditional Moldovan Wedding

🌾 Coming Back Home to Moldova

After years of living in Barcelona, we finally spent three wonderful weeks back home in Moldova, in our hometown Orhei.

It’s been 15 years since we moved from Moldova to Spain, and every time we return, it feels like a heartwarming mix of nostalgia and rediscovery.
This trip was not just a vacation — it was a reconnection with our roots, family, and the everyday rhythm of Moldovan life.

💻 Balancing Work and Family Time

We spent most weekdays working remotely from home — something that has become second nature to us. The peaceful environment in Orhei, surrounded by nature, actually made it easier to stay productive.
Fast internet, quiet mornings, and homemade lunches (nothing beats Moldovan food!) made working from home a pleasant experience.

In the evenings, the focus shifted from work to family — and especially to basketball training for the kids.

🏀 Basketball Evenings in Orhei

Every evening, Marc and his friends trained at the local basketball court. It became a wonderful routine: work during the day, and sports, laughter, and fresh air after sunset.
It was great to see how passionate kids in Moldova are about sports — and how the local community supports them.

The courts were always full of energy, music, and parents chatting nearby — a simple joy that reminded us of our own childhoods in Orhei.

🎡 Fun Days at OrheiLand – The Heart of Family Entertainment

One of the highlights of our stay was definitely OrheiLand, the largest amusement park in Moldova — and one of the biggest in Eastern Europe!

Located in the heart of Orhei, OrheiLand offers a perfect mix of fun and relaxation for families.
What makes it truly special is that entrance is free, making it accessible for everyone — and that’s something we absolutely love about it.

🌈 What to Expect at OrheiLand

  • 🎠 Attractions for all ages — from roller coasters and carousels to 5D cinemas and water games.
  • 🏖️ Artificial beach area with pools and sun loungers — ideal for hot summer days.
  • 🍦 Street food stalls and cafés offering local snacks, ice cream, and fresh lemonade.
  • 🎶 Evening concerts and shows, especially on weekends.
  • 🎨 Kids’ creative workshops and playgrounds.

The kids could spend hours here without getting bored, and it became our go-to place every weekend.

Whether you’re a local or visiting Moldova for the first time, OrheiLand is a must-visit destination for families.

💒 A Traditional Moldovan Wedding Experience

During our last days in Moldova, we had the chance to attend a traditional Moldovan wedding, and it was truly unforgettable.

Moldovan weddings are famous for their warmth, music, and endless food, and this one reminded us just how beautiful our traditions are.

🥂 The Celebration

The wedding began with the church ceremony, followed by a reception filled with joy, folk songs, and traditional dances like the Hora.
Tables overflowed with delicious Moldovan dishes — sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), placinte (savory pastries), mamaliga with cheese and sour cream, and homemade wine.

🎻 Music & Dance

Music plays a huge role in Moldovan weddings — from folk ensembles to DJs playing both modern hits and traditional songs.
Everyone dances! From grandparents to the youngest kids, the atmosphere is pure happiness.

💐 Cultural Traditions

One of the most touching moments is the “bride’s farewell”, when the bride says goodbye to her parents before starting her new life.
It’s emotional, symbolic, and represents the deep family ties Moldovan culture is known for.

❤️ Why This Trip Meant So Much

These three weeks reminded us why Moldova will always be home.
It’s a place where time slows down, where people greet you with genuine smiles, and where traditions are still cherished.

After living 15 years in Barcelona, coming back to Orhei felt like pressing pause — reconnecting with family, childhood memories, and the simple joys that define Moldovan life.

We left with our hearts full, grateful for the warmth, the family dinners, the laughter, and the beautiful balance between our modern life abroad and the traditions we’ll always carry within us.
