Calella de Palafrugell with kids, one of Costa Brava treasures.

Salty sea air, golden sand, and a beautiful beach of Costa Brava: welcome to the most beautiful destination Calella de Palafrugell!

Calella de Palafrugell is an easy spot to fall in love with, and not feel the need to travel further afield. If you stay in Barcelona it is 127 km to Calella de Palafrugell. And if you stay in Girona, then is only 52 km away.

Even if, we live for so long in Barcelona, it was our first time we visited Calella de Palafrugell. And it becomes by far one of our favorite places on the Costa Brava. This little town, located an hour and a half from Barcelona, feels like you’ve found a hidden treasure. We went for 1 day only, it was on Sunday. But, if we only knew how beautiful it is, then we would stay longer. Calella is the perfect place to get away for a quiet weekend to simply relax.

Calella de Palafrugell, is known as one of the most posh places of Costa Brava. It is small, easy to navigate, easy to get there. It has charming restaurants, beautiful spots, crystaline water and a great beach. Prices are higher than in other parts of Costa Brava, but the stay worth any penny spent there.

As I told you, we stayed only 1 day there. But, on our return, I was already checking the hotels around, and prices for getting there with our kids. The point is, that this is a town that does not have lots of hotels, so maybe renting an apartment would be an option. I was checking as well Begur, or other villages close by. So, it is up to you where you will choose to stay. But, to visit it is just a must-see place.

There is a great walking trail in this area that takes you along the rocky shoreline, in and out of its clear blue coves, with beautiful views of the gorgeous town in the distance. We stopped to take some beautiful pictures at one of the rocky beaches, that backs up to a stark cliff. I loved climbing the rocks and find clear turquoise water. Anyway, we didn’t stay there, as for kids it is not so suitable. We went back for a golden sand beach.

Calella de Palafrugell is considered one of the most posh villages on the Costa Brava, yet it still retains the soul of an ancient fishing village.

What makes it special:

  • Small and easy to explore on foot
  • Whitewashed and pastel-colored houses
  • Fishing boats resting on the sand
  • Crystal-clear water and small coves
  • Charming restaurants and scenic viewpoints

Prices are higher than in other Costa Brava towns, but the experience is absolutely worth every euro.

The best place to take shots, it is for sure from Sant Roc Hotel. It has views that overlook the sea and town center.

Calella doesn’t have many hotels, so booking in advance is essential, especially in summer. Renting an apartment can be a great option, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Nearby villages like Begur or Llafranc are also excellent places to stay and are just a short drive away. Even if you don’t stay overnight, Calella de Palafrugell is a must-see when visiting the Costa Brava.

Restaurants are not inexpensive and you need reservations in season. As in many resort towns the better food is often not found along the seafront where you are paying for the view and not for the food. I was recommended to find a restaurant where it is served the fish as main dish. Here to mention, Calella de Palafrugell, is an ancient fishing village. They were fishing for ages, and locals know to impress the guests with a good fish.

Calella de Palafrugell is an idyllic village, with crystalline, where fishing boats lie on the sand or by the water. Whitewashed and pastel coloured buildings make this place a very romantic one. Small beaches to choose from lay along the coast, and you just go and choose your favorite one. A little tip. If you want to stay in the first row, just in front of water, then you have to come early in the morning. Naturally enough this is the busiest beach during the season.

As well, we recommend an easy walk around the headland to Llafranc, is a wonderful way to connect with nature. The scenery here is also a perfect trigger for a peaceful, content heart and to rebirth your creative processes.

Beaches in Calella de Palafrugell (Best for Families)

Calella offers several small beaches and coves, each with its own charm.

🏖 Platja de Port Bo (Best for Kids)

  • Shallow water
  • Lifeguards in summer
  • Golden sand
  • Located in the town center

This is the busiest beach in high season, so arrive early if you want a spot close to the water.

We also explored rocky coves with stunning turquoise water, perfect for photos and swimming — but they are less suitable for small children, so we returned to a sandy beach.
