🏀 Our Family Trip to Riga, Latvia
In August 2025, we spent five wonderful days in Riga, from August 13th to 18th, traveling for Marc’s U11 basketball tournament. His team played brilliantly and proudly took 3rd place!
We decided to arrive a day before the tournament and stay a day after to make the most of this beautiful destination — and Riga did not disappoint.

Riga Old Town is a perfect mix of medieval charm, colorful streets, family-friendly attractions, and cozy cafés. Every corner feels like stepping into a fairy tale, and the city is easy to explore on foot, even with kids.
🏰 Top Things to See and Do in Riga Old Town
1. House of the Blackheads
One of the most iconic buildings in Riga, this stunning Gothic facade will leave you speechless. Originally built in the 14th century, it was destroyed during WWII and later rebuilt to perfection. A great place for photos and to learn about the city’s fascinating history.

The heart of Riga Old Town! The cathedral’s grand architecture and peaceful courtyard make it a must-visit. If you’re lucky, you might hear the famous organ — one of the largest in Europe.
3. St. Peter’s Church & Tower View
Climb to the top of St. Peter’s Church for the best panoramic view of Riga. From above, you can see the river, red rooftops, and cobbled streets below. The kids loved spotting the tournament arena from the tower!

These are the oldest residential buildings in Riga, each representing different architectural styles through the centuries. It’s a short stop but perfect for a family photo and to show the kids how houses evolved over time.

This square is the heartbeat of Old Riga, surrounded by beautiful buildings, street musicians, and cafés. We loved sitting here after games, enjoying ice cream, and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.

A short walk from the Old Town, this park is perfect for kids to run around after sightseeing. The Freedom Monument is Latvia’s national symbol — and a great spot to teach kids about local history.

One of Europe’s largest markets, set inside old Zeppelin hangars! Even if you’re not shopping, it’s an amazing experience to walk around, try Latvian treats, and feel the city’s authentic rhythm.
9. Museum of Illusions Riga
A fun and interactive spot, especially after a long basketball day! Kids loved the mirror rooms and optical illusions — and parents loved watching them laugh nonstop.
