Our trip to Fuerteventura was a blast, a total success in terms of relaxation, exploration, and simply enjoying our time as a family. These holidays wouldn’t have been a total success without Pierre & Vacances collaboration.

I know we were missed, and you awaited new posts and our post-holiday impressions. But, my sister is in town, and I have to show her all the beauty outside of Barcelona as well, leaving almost no time for blogging.

As most of you already know, we visited Fuerteventura, the second-largest of the Canary Islands. It’s an amazing Canary Island, one of the eight in the archipelago, with consistently warm Spanish weather year-round.

For our US readers, Fuerteventura is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Saharan Africa. The island was formed by ancient volcanoes and shaped by the winds from the Sahara Desert. Though it’s geographically distant from mainland Spain, it is still a Spanish island.

With its rugged, volcanic terrain surrounded by white sandy beaches, Fuerteventura makes a perfect holiday destination for families, couples, and surfers. The constant wind helps to cool down the warm temperatures, making this Spanish island a year-round destination.

During the day, you can perfectly lay out on the beach and get a tan, while in the evening, it gets pretty cold, so you need a jacket.

To get to Fuerteventura from Barcelona, you need to take a 3-hour flight. Kids love flying, but even for ours, 3 hours is a pretty long time. We had to entertain them during the flight, as they didn’t want to sleep, and watching movies on screens is not a solution for us.

At first, we thought to stay all day long at Pierre & Vacances Origo Mare Village and enjoy the pool and their activities inside the village. That is why we initially decided not to rent a car. However, we were advised to explore the island, as it is very beautiful. So, at the very last moment, we decided to rent a car. And we were happy with this decision.

The best part of renting a car on an island is that you can more easily get wherever you want and enjoy the best local places that are usually left undiscovered by most tourists.

An important tip for family travelers: if you plan to travel to an island, no matter which one, you just have to seriously consider your place of stay and renting a car. You have to think about spending your holidays wisely and coming back happy and relaxed.

Top Places to visit with kids in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain:

Corralejo

We stayed in Lajares, a town close to Corralejo. For my family, Corralejo is the perfect place to discover.

It has a lovely beach that is the perfect size for strolling with kids, and it is also a very short journey from the massive sand dunes of the National Park (Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo). Approximately 11 kilometers covered with fine sand are a great playground for the young and the old alike. If you followed our Instagram stories, you saw our lovely videos with the kids and the beautiful sunset.

We were also advised to visit the closest island, Isla de Lobos. But, at the very last moment, we decided to stay and stare at it from Corralejo Beach, enjoying watching other people kitesurfing.

El Cotillo

El Cotillo, another close place to Lajares, offers a quieter pace and is largely untouched by tourism. This is the kind of place that gives you a real taste of the real life of Fuerteventura. People go there to surf, enjoy the prettiest sunsets, and have a lovely time.

If you head north from El Cotillo, following a dirt road, you will find a lighthouse and some interesting coastline. We did, and the views were spectacular.

Costa Calma, Risco del Paso

Costa Calma is a long beach that can entertain children for hours on its own. It is the best beach because you cannot see where it ends. Costa Calma, along with other beaches, extends over 18 km, and all of these beaches are perfect for kids, with turquoise water and big sandy beaches.

The gently sloping sands and shallow, gentle waters of this stunning horseshoe-shaped bay make Costa Caleta a family favorite.

Betancuria

Betancuria is the former capital of Fuerteventura. It lies in a picturesque valley next to a dry stream. Betancuria has quite a lot of historical and cultural heritage. What we loved about this place is that it showcases exactly the Spanish culture and the culture of the people living on the island.

Tefia

Tefia village is home to the ‘Ecomuseum’ called La Alcogida. The buildings were restored using original methods and here you can see what life on the island looked like before the arrival of tourists.

La Oliva

The volcanic landscape around La Oliva is stunning. But we, stopped here to take some shots close to wind mills, that are stunning as well.

Tindaya

Tindaya, was an occasional stop, as kids wanted to get out of car and relax in a beautiful playground, that had spectacular views over the Tindaya, island´s volcano.

Mirador de Guise y Ayose

Actually, we intended to visit Mirador de Morro, but we went on a Sunday or Monday when it is closed to the public. This forced us to change our plans and go to Mirador de Guise y Ayose instead. The views there are spectacular, worth every minute spent. You can see how the ocean and the sky merge to form an entirely blue vista.

There we learned that Guise and Ayose were the kings of Fuerteventura, with one ruling the North part of the island and the other the South. It has become one of the most touristy places, and I understand why; the views are just spectacular.

Museo de la sal Salinas del Carmen

This place, we left for our last day in Fuerteventura, as it is close to the airport, and easy to get. Till recently, it was closed to the wide public, as it was refurbished. Now, you can see a daily work that is done to get salt. Really lovely experience

Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste was our last stop on the island, it is only 10-minute drive from the airport, and it is just perfect place to take your family. Located centrally on the east coast, this place is brilliant for those who want to enjoy some quality time with kids.

It has a big, man-made beach with a small but entertaining climbing frame built on it and, again, there are lots of restaurants as well.
