Navigating Japan with JR Pass: A Shinkansen Odyssey

Revisiting the cherished memories of our incredible journey through Japan! 🗾 The excitement of boarding the Shinkansen for the very first time was unparalleled – the speed, the efficiency! 🚅 And let’s not forget the soda vending machines that seemed to pop up at every corner, offering a fascinating array of flavors. The air was filled with a symphony of captivating scents that truly captured the essence of Japan. 🥤🌸 Amidst all this, our kids were like enthusiastic explorers in a wonderland, their eyes gleaming with the desire to collect a piece of everything we came across.

It all started when I bought our JR Passes in Barcelona, paying over 1k EUR for 4 passes (2 adults + 2 kids). After reading numerous reviews about people not receiving their passes on time or facing issues, I was anxious. When purchasing a JR Pass, you provide details like name, surname, passport data, and your stay duration in Japan.

Though having the pass personalized is great, given the high cost, there are factors limiting replacement:

🔺 If the pass doesn’t arrive on time, you can’t obtain it in Japan—advice: buy it at least 2 weeks prior. Fortunately, we got ours in 48h.

🔺 Losing the pass means no replacement.

🔺 Breaking it is another irreversible issue.

On our last train to Kyoto, my JR Pass got caught in the machine. No station personnel were around, so we had to call for assistance. With more than half the trip left, I was worried. Unsure if a new JR Pass was an option, I was grateful to the officer who retrieved and saved it. While it couldn’t be used in machines afterward, showing it to security allowed us to pass smoothly. The rest of our trip went without a hitch, but that day remains etched in my memory.

Our journey through Japan was not just about navigating the trains; it was about experiencing the culture, the beauty, and the people. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, every moment was filled with awe and wonder.

But perhaps the highlight of our trip was the experience of riding the Shinkansen. The sleek bullet trains whisked us from one city to another with unparalleled speed and comfort. Watching the landscape blur by outside the window was a mesmerizing experience, one that left us in awe of Japan’s technological prowess.

We explored Nikko, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kurashiki, and even enjoyed the thrills of Universal Studios Osaka – all included in our JR Pass. The only extra spending on public transport was within Tokyo metro stations, Kyoto buses, and Osaka metro stations; all other movements were seamlessly covered by our JR Pass.

As we reflect on our Shinkansen adventure, we can’t help but feel grateful for the memories we’ve made and the experiences we’ve shared as a family. Japan truly captured our hearts, and we can’t wait to return someday to create even more unforgettable moments. 🇯🇵
