Charming towns of Catalonia: Rupit and Besalu

As far as you know, my sister came to us in visit on Easter holidays. Usually she comes during summer, and previous times on winter time. She already knows each part of Barcelona, best beaches of Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava. But, till this trip, she didn´t know that such charming villages exists in Catalonia: Rupit and Besalu.

Now, she knows, that there are several medieval villages in Catalonia, worth to be visited.

RUPIT

In one of the days, we took the car, 3 kids, and went to discover the best villages around. Our first stop was Rupit. The village is really small, and in 1h you can see it all. We saw it in 3h, as we went with 3 kids, who wanted to stay at playground. Rupit is located between the Collsacabra mountains and the Guilleries, walking through the town with its stone houses is a true wonder.

Its origins date back to the ninth century, when the castle of Rupit was built, around which, with the passage of time, more and more houses were built until it reached its peak in the seventeenth century.

Nowadays Rupit is a town of stone houses that preserve the medieval essence of yesteryear. Its streets are narrow, some of them cobbled. As well, during your walks you can see that in many of the facades of the houses, on the walled doors there are inscriptions that inform us of the antiquity and the history of the house.

A lot of people comes here to do hiking. I would really love to do it, but for sure, such plans are for not going with little kids.

As well, people who visit Rupit, discover another village, Pruit. We didn´t go there, as we had few hours left, and we wanted to see Besalu in the same day.

BESALU

As told previously, our second stop of that day, was Besalu. Charming village of Catalonia, that gets known by tourists more and more. If the producer of Games of Thrones would visited this village, for sure, there would be any of the series done there. Crossing the Romanesque bridge of Besalú on the river Fluviá is a must for travellers who come here. Located in La Garrotxa and declared a National Historic-Artistic Site for its architectural value, Besalú is full of corners where the medieval and Jewish past mix.

Kids were tired, and the only place they wanted to stay was the river, and the green park around. So it was, a big negotiation done, we visited the village, and they enjoyed the river and sunny day.

I won´t tell you, that I had a lot of plans for 1 day only, and I was upset that we visited only 2 villages. But, if you go with 3 kids, be prepared to travel slowlier :). In such a way, that everyone can enjoy.
